Background and Mission

The Sharon Laverne Community Foundation (TSLCF) was established on April 4, 2017.  Our organization’s vision began to evolve when a number of individuals came to our organization’s founder asking for guidance as they expressed concerns about the numerous problems in their community and the overall plight of residents of the 7th and 8th Wards.  At the time, our Founder and CEO was serving as the Black Emphasis Program Manager in the Federal Government and these discussions led to the creation of TSLCF.  Further discussions lead to the question, "How can we help on a larger scale?"  So began the Foundation and its mission to improve the lives of the impoverished, provide training, and address hot-button issues like urban crime and incarceration.

Arguably, the problems in these communities are innumerable, but our dedicated team will work to improve the lives of the impoverished through various efforts including:  job training/entrepreneurship, outreach, education, case management and mental health service referrals, and other various services targeting self-improvement, self-development, and empowerment.
Through the provision of self-development and empowerment strategies, we will collaboratively work with the residents in these communities as they travel down the path to self-sufficiency.  We will provide educational outreach services as we work to break the cycle of poverty through educational attainment and community growth.

  Toward that end, our organization is operating based on the following programmatic goals:  to improve outcomes for the impoverished; to improve education; to address mental health issues; to address the need for job training; to address the need to advance women; and to address urban crime and incarceration.

The various Foundation Training Components (including the entrepreneurial component) will also include, but will not be limited to:
• Motivational and parenting seminars;
• Self-identity and awareness training;
• Basic budgeting and finance;
• Social studies; and
• Spanish as a second language.
The Foundation will work together with respective council members to achieve our goals.
Finally, these programs will lead to community transformation for the better. These efforts are meant to inspire, motivate, energize and stimulate these two predominately African American communities as we work to develop solutions for the problems in our communities from within our communities.
